Richard Coles' Newsletter: 26 March 2009

Hello all, Richard Coles here, sitting in Fi’s chair, for the final time before her much-anticipated return. When she lowers herself into its velour comforts, will it still be radiant with the warmth of my spreading rump? Such intimate speculations are much in mind today, my forty-seventh birthday, which began with the, now daily, struggle to raise myself from the accommodating horizontal plane through a giddying ninety degrees.

Getting up is for me how I imagine astral projection must be for New Agers – my consciousness goes ahead of my body – and I fear, as I negotiate the trip-hazards that add urgency to the first pee of the day, turning round to see myself lagging behind. I leave that with you (and, at the risk of sounding like Denis Norden, if you have any tales of those terrible moments when time’s winged chariot suddenly appears in your rear-view mirror, do let us know).

It’s JP Devlin’s birthday today too, so he and I looked in the paper and found that we share our anniversary with Richard Dawkins, Mr Spock, William Hague, Keira Knightley, and then a lot of distinguished-sounding peers and judges we’d never heard of.

For the programme on Saturday we’ve been out and about with a practitioner of ‘parkour’, aka street-running; we have the Inheritance Tracks of Jah Wobble, enfant terrible now of riper years; I’ll be talking to woman who, for the past fifteen years, has been stalked in the most menacing way by a former lover; and we meet the man who invented the non-reusable syringe (he thinks he’s saved six million lives) – oh, and the birthday cake will be provided by our star guest, Prue Leith.

See you Saturday,
Richard.
