'...almost from the moment you're born, you're playing an instrument and picking up the tunes from your father and his father before him'

How I came to this music:

Since I was a child I've loved music because almost everyone in the Gypsy community plays an instrument, be it the accordion, guitar, violin or double bass. All the men in my family play and my sisters dance. It's unusual for Roma women to play the instruments but they always sing and dance.

Vanya - Bronislav KrawczykWe'd always have music at our family celebrations like weddings and christenings. There's be lots of music and loud noise, just like you can hear at our rehearsals - people laughing and dancing and always lots of children running about and playing.

Our tradition is an oral one so it's very hard to say how old our music is because almost from the moment you're born, you're playing an instrument and picking up the tunes from your father and his father before him. This gypsy music is very important to me as a Roma. We don't want to hide our tradition - we want other people to experience it too.
