Claire is a woman with a lot on her mind. Living at home with her mother Louise, whilst her siblings flew the nest, at times she feels isolated, put-upon and resentful at being left behind. Her work as a nurse in a local care home is rewarding but exhausting, and in the past she has used drink as a crutch, but now cigarettes are her only vice. She is single and still harbours hopes for her relationship with Sam, despite the fact he now lives on the other side of the world. But despite their flaws, she loves her mother and brothers dearly, and exudes a gentleness and a deep humanity that draws people towards her. Adam’s death shatters her, and leaves her floundering.
