Background
Noluthando Grace Madikane was born in the UK while Kate was back in Ambridge from South Africa (Hayley drove Kate to the hospital).
Her father, Lucas Madikane, is a South African journalist. In 2012, he got a job in Durban so the family moved there from Johannesburg. Kate left South Africa and moved back to Ambridge at the end 2014. Noluthando's brother, Sipho, is six years younger than her.
Since Kate left South Africa in 2014, video calls between Nolly, Sipho and their mother were strained. In October 2016, Noluthando and Sipho barely had anything to say to Kate. Then Kate felt low after receiving a Christmas card from her children – Sipho had put love and kisses but Noluthando just signed her name. Since then relations between them have warmed and Nolly and Kate now enjoy a closer relationship.
When Noluthando was little she loved people - not just family but also strangers in the street. She’d be putting up her arms for a cuddle.
Noluthando is very close to her paternal grandparents, Michael and Delia, who have been very much involved in Noluthando and Sipho’s upbringing since Kate left South Africa.

Phoebe has spent time in South Africa and has an affinity with Noluthando and Sipho over the unreliability of their mother Kate. After Kate had an affair, Phoebe worried that Kate would abandon Noluthando and Sipho, like she abandoned Phoebe in the past...
