Sally Phillips: 'We should never have had people who are neurotypical playing neurodiverse characters'
Actor, writer and comedian Sally Phillips joined Datshiane Navanayagam to discuss her new ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ One comedy series, Austin.
She plays Ingrid, the wife of a much-loved children’s author, who has just discovered he has an adult son who is neurodivergent.
Sally spoke about the joy of working alongside actor Michael Theo, who is autistic and plays Austin in the series. You might recognise him from the TV series Love on the Spectrum.
She shared how much of her role was influenced by her relationship with her own son, Olly, who has Down’s syndrome.
Sally also discussed the need for accessibility to ensure neurodiverse actors can be represented in the industry, and the responsibility she feels to others in the community to use her platform.
You can listen to the full interview with Sally on ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Sounds – it’s the Woman’s Hour episode from 3 April.
