According to reports, Tim Burton is to direct a new live action version of Dumbo and now animal rights group PETA have written to him suggesting that he should change the ending.

Elisa Allen Associate Director of PETA told 5 live, "we want Tim Burton to give Dumbo a new ending - one in which he escapes the abuse of the circus industry and is able to live out his life in a sanctuary".

The ending to the original film sees Dumbo become the star of the circus when the keepers discover that he can fly.

Elisa believes that the film should "reflect current public attitudes" especially now that America's longest running circus, the Ringling Brothers, has announced that it will phase out elephants from its performances by 2018.

PETA US say they have successfully convinced producers to change films starring animals as main characters before, including a request that the story of 'Marley and Me' should be changed so that the dog was adopted from a rescue group instead of purchased from a breeder.
