One-year-old's life support withdrawn after High Court battle
One-year-old Olivia Stanca died last night, after her parents agreed to the withdrawal of life support. Their battle to save her life had ended up in the High Court.
Olivia was born with a tumour on her adrenal gland which spread to her liver. She developed serious complications as a result of treatment. Doctors felt further treatment wasn't in her best interests, but her parents wanted Olivia to continue receiving medical care.
Anne-Marie Irwin from the law firm Irwin Mitchell was representing Olivia's parents George and Maria.
She said Olivia was "able to go up to the roof garden of the hospital, spent some time with her parents and sadly she died a short while later"
"As medical treatment has moved on.. there are likely to be" more battles over children's medical care reaching court.
