Rent to own: I spent 拢1100 on my 拢500 TV

A group of MPs say some customers who rent out household items like washing machines, sofas and laptops on a weekly basis are being overcharged, and are at risk of being mis-sold extra products like insurance.

5 live's Nick Garnett spoke to one woman in Huddersfield who ended up spending 拢1100 on a 拢500 TV: she said rent-to-own companies are "a rip off."

In a statement, BrightHouse, the Uk's biggest rent-to-own company, says it is "disappointed" with the report and that its products give customers "peace of mind". But it adds that it's in the process of becoming more "transparent and competitive" and it will show the individual prices of its service packages from later this month.
