Gunmen have attacked the Paris office of French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, killing 12 people and wounding seven, French officials say.

The satirical weekly has courted controversy in the past 鈥� in November 2011 the magazine was firebombed a day after it carried a caricature of the Prophet Muhammad.

Parisian political analyst, Dominique Moisi, said the shooting was a 鈥渄eeply shocking鈥� attack on what made France a 鈥渇ree, open, democratic society鈥�.

鈥淚t鈥檚 an attack on freedom to criticise anything, everyone,鈥� he said.

鈥淭his is the essence of what we are that they are choosing to attack in the most barbaric manner.鈥�
