Ofcom chief exec: ‘I want to drive responsibility through tech firms’

The chief executive of OFCOM has admitted some big tech companies won't sign up to an alert system to prevent intimate image abuse, but the regulator is looking into making it one of its formal codes.

Speaking to 5 Live’s Rick Edwards, Dame Melanie Dawes explained some of the voluntary measures social media platforms could adopt to tackle misogyny, pile-ons, online domestic abuse and intimate image abuse.

Dame Melanie hopes the new draft guidance will be a “proper blueprint” for tech firms looking to protect women and girls online.

Social media companies say they are committed to preventing and removing harmful content and are working with law enforcement and women’s safety groups.
