The Qur'an was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) 1,400 years ago in Arabia in an area we now know as the Middle East. In the middle of the desert and mountains lay the city of Mecca (also known as Makkah), which the Ka'aba made a holy city. As there was a supply of water there it was also an important trading city, lying on the trade routes between east and west.
