Family guy
Rheas are relatives of the ostrich but live on the plains of South America. Males make the nest and look after the eggs. One male will have around six females in his harem, all of whom will lay in his nest. If the females lay outside the nest, he will roll them into the nest to join the rest of the clutch so they can be incubated properly. His final clutch may be huge - as many as 50 - but they all hatch together despite being laid by many different females. This happens because the young pipe to one another while they are still inside their shells, stimulating those that are a bit behind to speed up their development. The advantage of them all hatching at the same time is that they can all go off and feed together under their father's watchful eye. Without him by their side, the grassland would be a very dangerous place.
