Roy Francis: Wales's Black Leader in a White World
The story of how Roy Francis became a black leader in a white world and the founder of modern rugby coaching methods, at a time when almost every door was shut to black Britons.
Historian and biographer Tony Collins tells the story of how Roy Francis became the first black man to coach a winning team at Wembley and why he should now be credited as the founder of modern rugby coaching methods. In south Wales, Collins uncovers how the experiences of racism on an illegitimate mixed-race child, raised by a black Welsh family, were to shape his outlook for the rest of his life. The programme chronicles Roy's rise from the fields of his hometown to signing for Wigan as a 17-year-old in the 1930s, to becoming the first black player to play for the Great Britain Rugby League Lions in 1947 and then to pioneering Championship and Challenge Cup winner as the first black coach of a professional sports club in Britain. Players who served in Roy's teams reveal the techniques, tactics and characteristics that made him such a unique and innovative figure. Family members share their personal memories of Roy鈥檚 life and career. In one of the most dramatic Wembley Cup Finals ever seen, Leeds win the Rugby League Challenge Cup in 1968 by one point, when, in torrential rain, Wakefield's Don Fox misses a conversion in front of the posts in the last second of the match; the footage of the missed conversion becoming one of the most replayed clips in rugby history. But what was even more astounding, and a fact not acknowledged at the time, was the coach of the winning side was Roy Francis, a black man from Brynmawr. In the 1950s and 60s, when racial discrimination was endemic in Britain, Roy Francis was a leader of teams who were overwhelmingly white. In no other walk of British life was a black man in such a position of authority over white people. This documentary tells a unique tale of black achievement at a time when almost every door was shut to black Britons.
