³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ New Generation Artists celebration plus Tchaikovsky from Switzerland
Linton Stephens showcases the best performances from the UK and beyond, including a celebration of the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ New Generation Artists scheme and music from Switzerland.
Linton Stephens showcases the best performances by ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ orchestras, choirs, ensembles and other great performing groups from Europe and around the globe. This week on Classical Live, we celebrate 25 years of the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ New Generation Artists scheme. Founded in 1999, the programme supports some of the world’s most exciting young instrumentalists, ensembles and singers at the start of their international careers, through performance and broadcast opportunities on Radio 3. Today, the Takacs String Quartet perform Haydn, pianist Giorgi Gigashvili plays Prokofiev and violinist Lisa Batiashvili will play Brahms Violin Concerto in D for our centrepiece.
Plus there’s another chance to hear from ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Radio 3’s ‘25 for ‘25: Sounds of the Century’ – a series of brand new commissions celebrating and commemorating some of the biggest events from the first quarter of the 21st century. 'In Trial and Error' Finnish composer Sauli Zinovjev reflects on the trial of Saddam Hussein which was widely shared on the newly launched You Tube in 2005. The piece for New Generation Artist cellist Santiago Canon-Valencia uses the trial as a metaphor for a broader human experience: the constant cycle of trying, failing, and trying again. Co-commissioned with the Henry Barber Trust.
We will also hear music from Switzerland, thanks to our partnership with the European Broadcasting Union. The Swiss Orchestra, conducted by Lena-Lisa Wüstendörfer, perform Tchaikovsky's Excerpts from 'Serenade in C, Op. 48' and the Basel Chamber Orchestra play Bartók's Divertimento.
