Power for the People

partners with local communities in East Africa to address poverty鈥檚 root causes: breaking the cycle of dependence and empowering individuals and communities to achieve sustainable development and self-sufficiency.

Introducing Mercy

Introducing Mercy
Mercy was 12 years old when Power for the People began a partnership with her school on Remba Island, in Lake Victoria, Kenya. Like many schoolgirls in Kenya and across the world, Mercy often missed school because of her period.

Giving dignity and the gift of education

Giving dignity and the gift of education
Through the Arise programme, Mercy and her classmates were given 鈥淒ignity Packs鈥 containing six re-usable sanitary pads, soap and underwear. The charity also constructed safe, private changing spaces and delivered menstrual hygiene education.

More than dignity kits

More than dignity kits
Mercy excelled in school and secured a secondary school scholarship on Kenya鈥檚 mainland. She tells us: 鈥淚 want to train as a nurse, so that I can return to Remba and help other girls like me. I want to give them hope and show what is possible.鈥
