'That's a beautiful song!'
The Rose, Sean explains, is a beautiful song, which he has no intention of playing today.
"Will you please," asks Anne in Belfast, "play The Rose by Bette Midler?"
"Anne," says Sean. "Yes. That's a beautiful song."
He pauses.
"I went off that song, Anne, because when that song was popular in pubs everybody went up to sing, and they sang that song. And it's a nice song, but you need to listen to every word. There's a great story unfolds, like all good songs. But when someone sang it in the bars they got no order at all. People talked and they yapped away, and there was this poor singer giving it everything until it reached the big finish. And then everyone would cheer: 'Jeepers! That was great Mairead! Give us another one!' or 'go on Paddy! Good man yourself!' And they never listened to a word they said. And it put me off the song."
Sean looks at the request again.
"Anne in Belfast. The Rose by Bette Midler. Maybe I should play it tomorrow?"
