Jamie celebrates Charles Mingus on the centenary of his birth – UK bass player Gary Crosby joins to pay tribute and select his favourite Mingus track.
On the week the late, great American composer, bass player and bandleader Charles Mingus would have turned 100 years old, Jamie Cullum pays tribute to his incredible career.
Born April 22nd 1922, Charles Mingus came up playing with greats like Charlie Parker and Duke Ellington on the way to becoming one of the most revered jazz musicians of the 20th century. His compositions have been especially praised for pushing boundaries – albums like ‘Mingus Ah Um’ and ‘The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady’ show the huge breadth of his work.
Jamie plays some of favourite tracks and gets the bass player’s take on Mingus, from musician and co-founder of Tomorrow’s Warriors Gary Crosby.
