Dan and I watched the recent TV Friends Reunion with mixed emotions 鈥� we squealed and squirmed as they听went through ten years of love, drama, friendship, and laughter.

听

We reminisced about our favourite scenes - me, the ones with food, and Dan the New York Jewish comedy - and we mourned the loss of an era.听听Marta Kauffman, the creator, described the show as 鈥榯he time of our lives when our friends are our family鈥�.听听Her realisation that as Ross and Rachel settled down, Monica found true love in Chandler, Phoebe continued strumming with Richard, and Joey settled into womanising, that time of their lives had been and had now gone.听

听

That time of my life was in my mid 20s when I was lucky enough to study in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.听听With my larger-than-life friend Kulene, we wasted hours playing the very earliest version of Pacman, pretending to be revising, driving a tiny Honda through a blizzard, all the way to Buffalo New York with the windows wide open to keep us awake, buying and eating farmers鈥� market chocolate cheesecake, a heavenly concept then unknown in London, and teasing each other endlessly, she about my plump thighs and me about her crazy ponytail and endlessly outrageous politics.

听

Kulene flew over to my wedding in London, and we met, infrequently, over the years as we too moved into the next phase of our lives. Then, sadly last year I heard, that she had passed away during Covid, alone.听听

听

With other devastated Windsor friends, helped by video link, we celebrated her life sharing memories of Kulene, as they cast flowers into the Detroit River.听

听

The Jewish saying 鈥楳ay her memory be for a Blessing鈥櫶齬efers not just to the past but to the continued blessing that the person leaves behind, Kulene鈥檚 sense of fun, her love of people, and even her ponytail and politics.听听Whilst the TV fantasy of Friends; friendship, fun, frolicking is enticing, this year has shown, starkly, the reality for so many people, of the effects of isolation and loneliness. So, I find myself again with mixed emotions, heavy loss, both of my friend and of an era but also, replete, with the most joyful of memories and in Kulene鈥檚 name, a tiny slither of sadly, still chocolate free, cheesecake.听
