"This may seem rather strange," Sean says, "but I've been thinking about ladders in stockings. Does it not happen any more?"

"They still ladder," Janet says.

"I remember hearing my sister and my mother buying new stockings," Sean says, "and then there was a ladder on them. They wouldn't be wearing them an hour and suddenly there was a ladder on them, and there were a few choice words. Then to stop the ladder they used to get nail varnish. Does that still happen?"

There is no answer from Emma and Janet.

"I don't know why I started this conversation," Sean says.

"Stop now," Janet says.

"Everybody's wearing trousers now," Emma says.
