"You couldn't wash your face!"
Sean tells how he was laughed at when he asked for a job.
"I asked for a job washing dishes in a cafe in Dublin," says Sean. "Many years ago this was. A friend, John Hunter, and I headed off to work in Dublin, for the summer. We couldn't get a job anywhere! We couldn't even get a job picking strawberries. But we saw this sign in a cafe window, 'Dishwasher wanted!' I told them, 'I'm in about the job.' and they told me to go out the back to the kitchen, so I went down, and there was silence! And I repeated, 'I'm here about the job.' And the reply came, 'Are you serious?' I said, aye, and they laughed! The whole kitchen laughed, and I had no idea why. I couldn't even get the job washing dishes."
"I can't believe it," Jamesy Kelly says. "I'm trying to imagine this: Mr Coyle and John Hunter in Dublin. That must have been some escapade! We two tie-the-boys, myself (Jamesy Kelly) and another fellow, we went around every hotel in Dublin, and we never had to pay for a drink."
"Yes," Sean says, "and you're still doing it."
"You get a job washing dishes?" Jamesy says. "You couldn't wash your face! I am still waiting for you to play On the Road Again by Canned Heat!"
"And you've some chance of getting it now!" says Sean.
With music from Kirsty MacColl, Dave Edmunds, Joe Dolan, Scott McKenzie, The Righteous Brothers, and not Canned Heat.
