Dermot O'Leary sits in for Zoe and chats to actress Taj Atwal about the brand new series of hit ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ One drama The Syndicate. The show was created by Kay Mellor and in the first episode the staff of Woodvale Kennels discover they might have won the lottery, but when the jackpot is claimed by someone else, they realise their winning ticket has been stolen. Taj has starred in some of the biggest TV shows in recent years including; Line of Duty, Stella, In The Club, Death on the Tyne and Miranda.

Reverend Richard Coles is also on the show chatting to Dermot about his new book entitled The Madness of Grief. Richard has released a memoir focusing on his experience of losing his partner of 12 years, and how he’s coped with the madness of grief after his death. This is Richard’s fifth book and follows 2016’s ‘Bringing in the Sheaves: Wheat and Chaff from My Years as a Priest’. Whether it’s pastoral care for the bereaved, discussions about the afterlife with parishioners or being called out to perform the last rites, death is part of the Reverend Richard Coles’ routine.

Along with Clare Runacres on news, Richie Anderson on travel and Mike Williams on sport, he and the team have the best start to your morning. With celeb guests, headlines, tunes chosen by listeners, and more music that you can shake a glitterball at!

There's also a daily Pause For Thought and listeners on the line, as Dermot entertains the nation with fun for the family!

Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Today is Vincent Van Gogh’s birthday.

I’ve literally stood in front of Starry, Starry Night at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and sobbed like a baby.

I’ve cried my way around The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.

And I’ve sat at the National Gallery in London bawling my eyes out at his Sunflowers.
I’ve no absolutely no idea why Van Gogh’s art moves my heart the way it does, but my emotions pretty much well up to the point that I can’t contain them every time I’m in front of one of his paintings.

And yet, despite Van Gogh’s work being some of the most expensive in the world, despite the crowds that will surround his paintings, Van Gogh died penniless at the age of 37. He completed over 900 works of art, but he wasn’t a success in his own lifetime.

Sometimes I reflect on my own life. Occasionally I get down that I haven’t made the impact that I wanted as a youth. I’ve not changed the world. It can be frustrating, even disheartening, when the work we commit our lives to barely even seems to make a mark. When it feels that nothing we’ve done seems to have mattered.

But I think we have to accept, that there is a chance that the work we commit our lives to will not bear fruit until long after we are gone. We may not reap the rewards of what we do in our own lifetime.

For me, this thought always hit home when I see a magnificent, mature tree. Whilst I marvel at its beauty, I often reflect that the person who planted it no longer walks the earth. I think of trees as a gift from the past, and reflect that the seeds we sow, may better be appreciated by future generations.

The Qur’an teaches that what we do remains with us for eternity; that the measure of our deeds goes beyond this world, and that our greatest success is determined by The One. I ultimately believe that whilst the seeds we plant may not always fruit in our lifetime, we should sow them none-the-less; our job is to do good, and the harvest will reach us in one Dimension or another.
