Dermot O'Leary sits in for Zoe and chats to Denise Van Outen and Tamzin Outhwaite. Denise stars in her one woman show called Some Girl I Used To Know which is directed by Tamzin. In what the pair are calling a unique ‘pilm’ (play and film) Denise – who co-wrote the play originally with Terry Ronald - will take fans on a nostalgic warm theatrical journey in a bid to escape lockdown blues and lift the spirits of the nation. The play, which first debuted to sold out audiences on the West End at the Arts Theatre in 2014, will transport theatre-goers to a time when hopes were high and love was intoxicating – and Covid wasn’t even conceived. Most recently, Denise has appeared as a contestant on C4’s The Celebrity Circle and before that was competing on Dancing on Ice before an injury forced her out of the competition. Denise is also currently working with Terry Ronald on an autobiography giving fans a glimpse of behind the scenes during her 30-year career in showbiz.

Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Much of my work is public speaking—a job transformed by the pandemic from one of hotels and conference stages to loungerooms and laptops. Recently I Zoomed in to speak at a church in Walsall. My topic was going to beÌýjoy, but that all changed when a few days before I was due to join them one of their members passed away from Covid. Paul was in his mid-30s—he was young and fit—but now his family was missing a father and the church a friend. This wasn’t a time of joy, but one of wilderness.

Ìý

To me, ‘wilderness’ is the right metaphor for times like this. Like the famous story of the Jews wandering for forty years, the wilderness is that barren place between longing and fulfilment—where you search but can’t seem to reach the ‘Promised Land’ of the relationship, career or healing you’ve wanted. The wilderness is a hard place to dwell—but in my experience, there’s hope beyond its tears.

Ìý

Like my Walsall friends, some enter the wilderness through loss. My wife and I entered it through infertility; others enter it another way again. The chorus of Kanye West’s songÌýJesus WalksÌýcomes from, and is sung by, a gospel choir that started in a drug rehabilitation clinic.ÌýÌýÌýAs they walked through the wilderness of addiction, ‘Jesus walks with me’ became not just a lyric, but a prayer that led them out of the wilderness.

Ìý

If we were to Zoom back in history and watch the first Easter play out in real time, today Judas would cut a deal to turn Jesus in, tomorrow night Jesus would be arrested, and Friday morning he’d be crucified—a wilderness experience I can hardly imagine. But on Sunday morning rumours would spread about Jesus walking among them again, and on Sunday night we’d watch his disciples’ wilderness of grief turn to joy.

Ìý

And so, while I wasn’t sure what it would look like for them, I told my friends in Walsall that because of that first Easter, in the hands of God new things could spring from their grief. Amidst the tears, I believed there was hope for them—and us. Because after the wilderness comes a new beginning.
