Painting the Maine Lambeg drum, exploring the “Brian Boru pipes” and a family reaction to an old soldier’s voice from the past.
A hand-painted Lambeg drum destined for the USA, introducing the Brian Boru pipes, and a family’s memories on hearing their old soldier’s voice for the first time in decades.
Helen hears from the family of William McConnell – the Somme Veteran we heard on last week’s programme. The recording of William’s battle memories was made in 1993 – just ahead of his 100th birthday, but only came to light recently and hearing his voice for the first time in decades has stirred many memories.
Willie has been to meet Andy Young, the artist responsible for hand painting the images on a Lambeg drum that’s being gifted to the people of Maine, USA.
If it’s got anything to do with bagpipes, Rab isn’t far away – though on this occasion, it’s pipes with a difference. Bands playing the Brian Boru pipes are few and far between, so Rab chats with Colin Scott of the Ballygowan Pipe Band to hear more about these unusual pipes.
