A voice from the Somme – recordings just found of a veteran remembering the battle, and from Portavogie, memories of the GI’s.

For remembrance day, previously un-broadcast recordings of Somme veteran Private William McConnell, and from Portavogie, memories of tea time with the GIs.

The Kintra team marks Remembrance Day with a recently discovered recording of Private William McConnell’s memories of the Battle of the Somme. Broadcast for the first time, his personal account of events, places and names straight off the pages of our history books give a fascinating insight into his experiences of World War 1.
From Portavogie, Ena Ennis - a wee lassie in the 1940s – recalls the GI’s enjoying her mother’s tea and griddle breads as the Nisan Huts were built around the farm.
Roy Ferguson has a new poem written to honour a woman who tended war graves near her home in Scotland and we’ve a quick look at how the current restrictions are affecting one local war museum.
Helen Mark, Rab Lennox and Willie Hill keep the chat going this week and as always, they love to hear from listeners, so if you’ve a good yarn to share, a tune to request or an Ulster-Scots event to promote then get in touch by email at kintra@bbc.co.uk .
