Prayer for the Day
Good morning,Â
Today is the day we remember Mary the mother of Jesus. Here was a young and as far as we are told modest, mild mannered teenage girl who got caught up in the biggest story on earth, the birth, life and death of Jesus Christ.Â
There is a wonderful statue of a life-sized Walking Madonna in Salisbury Cathedral Close. Without a hint of blue veil, or eyes cast down, Elizabeth Frinks sculpture depicts a woman, firmly walking towards the world and all that it will bring.Â
As we come to be – as she came to be, that phrase encapsulates that when we think our future path is assured, stuff just happens and blows all our expectations off track. One of my heroes, Nina Simone, hoped to be a classical pianist, and because of the racism she experienced, ended up being the songsmith for the civil rights movement and for a re-evolution of the ways things were. Â
Today we praise a woman who gave birth to a child whose key message was love of God, self, and neighbour. People thought her son Jesus Christ had come to liberate a particular people, but his death demonstrated that his life was dedicated to freedom for all, These strange times have blown off track many expectations, and made many of us realise that like Mary we will need different travelling shoes,.  Loving God, raise up the lowly and bring down the mighty, and help us as we journey on, and as we come to be.Â
