Prayer for the Day, Thursday 19th March 2020

Good morning 鈥淭he noble art of Losing FaceMay one day save the Human RaceAnd turn into eternal meritWhat weaker minds would call disgrace.鈥滱 counter-intuitive view here from Danish poet, Piet Hein. Repentance and forgiveness are words found in the texts of most World Religions, despite the evidence of failing to practise what they preach. In family life, how often a small squabble ends in a rift, each defending their high moral ground to the last ditch - until someone risks giving an inch or saying, 鈥楽orry.鈥橭n the political stage, few are willing to lose face, but such gestures when they occur, are worth remembering. On this day in 1970, when the Iron Curtain聽 seemed as closed as the gates of hell, Willy Brandt and Willi Stoph, Cold War Prime Ministers of West and East Germany 鈥 met after a two-decade stand-off. Herr Brandt then visited the site of Buchenwald Camp and laid a wreath to acknowledge the victims of the holocaust in the time of his country鈥檚 Nazi government. Later, the world saw him in a kneeling gesture, honouring the the victims of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. This representative gesture of humble repentance evoked criticism as well as praise back home. For many it was a necessary act, for others a shameful losing of face. From our 50 year perspective, it is surely a soul-sized step in the healing of a nation, that opened the door to actual treaties and a statecraft of reconciliation across Europe.Let us give thanks for those willing to lose face for the sake of the human race. By your grace, O God, together, may we take risks in transcending political division and in the healing of memories. May we be reconciling love in places of enmity, prepared to build a bridge for peace and walk across it together. Amen.聽聽
