Remembering the war years and yarns of those who went, those who returned, the ‘new locals’ and the songs that helped.

Helen Mark and th Kintra team look back at the war years with yarns of those who went, those who returned, the friends who made this their home and the songs that helped.

Remembering the war years is our theme this week as Nicky Gilmore tells us about the Ballywalter lad who survived the Battle of the Somme, but never made it home. Jonnie Crawford hears about the Bendooragh man whose father-in-law, saw out the war as a German prisoner and on arrival home, sent a van load of local produce to Sandy Row.
Willie Hill visits a small museum set up by survivors of an elite American unit – the only one ever established outside the USA while Sylvia Burnside heads to Broughshane to visit what’s left of a camp for Gibraltarian evacuees.
Musically, we hear the stories behind two famous songs that kept the nation’s resolve strong and lightened the mood – and one was composed in a morning and performed live on air on ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Radio that evening – even more importantly for Kintra - it was written by a well-known Ulster-Scot!
If you’ve an Ulster-Scot yarns or event to advertise, the team would love to hear from you. Contact them anytime – Kintra@bbc.co.uk or say hello if you see them out and about
