Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From the Reverend Kate Bottley:

聽This week I found myself off on a plane to France to do a bit of work for that well-loved 成人快手 TV show Songs of Praise.聽 I still get excited by the whole thing. I鈥檓 not quite that person that claps the plane landing but I do passively aggressively stare at anyone who talks during the safety demonstration.

聽So, our lovely steward Gareth, as you would expect, had my full attention. It鈥檚 a familiar script, the reassurance that I鈥檒l have a little whistle and a torch should we land into the sea, and the bit where we are sagely reminded to, 鈥楶ut your own oxygen mask on before you attempt to help anyone else鈥.聽 Now while for most of us that isn鈥檛 instinctive, it is essential advice. There can be no caring for anyone else if I can鈥檛 breathe and in the event of an evacuation I can only imagine what sort of trip hazard an unconscious vicar in the aisle would be.聽

聽Jesus said, 鈥楲ove your neighbour as you love yourself鈥, it鈥檚 the golden rule, echoed in all major world faiths, and while the emphasis is usually on the first part, the action of love towards our neighbour, the second bit is just as important, reminding me that I can only love others by beginning from a place of self-love, loving myself being not just a gesture of self-care but an essential act to better love others. In the words of a great 21st century philosopher and poet, the drag legend Ru Paul 鈥業f you can鈥檛 love yourself how the heck are you going to love somebody else?鈥櫬

聽This week here on Radio 2 it鈥檚 been Faith in the World Week, and it鈥檚 reminded me it鈥檚 not a selfish act to have good self-care but rather means I鈥檓 better prepared to take good care of others. More than just making sure I eat, exercise and rest properly but checking I鈥檓 mentally well too, doing all the right things to keeping breathing in and out. And while I hope the flight will never be too bumpy or the cabin lose pressure I need my oxygen mask to be fully functional before taking a deep breath to help others remembering the most important human relationship of my life is the one I have with myself.聽
