听Let me tell you about three people, Zoe:

Firstly, my dad: happily married to mum for 36 years, until she died of cancer, aged just 57.听

A sobering thought as I鈥檒l reach the same age in August!听 Dad was devastated, but he鈥檚 been amazing: coping as a widower for 22 years and with Parkinson鈥檚 to boot!听 Some presumed he鈥檇 seek another relationship or re-marry.听 But for him, it wasn鈥檛 really an option.听 Mum was his everything.听 All he鈥檚 ever wanted subsequently is family around him and good company.

听Secondly, I think of a lady blessed with many friends, but who chose to be a nun.听 It may sound odd today, but she found true contentment in giving her life in service to God and to other people. She saw it as being rather like Jesus, who was totally devoted to his mission, his relationship with His Heavenly Father, and His close circle of friends.听听

听Lastly, I remember seeing a young woman weeping the other end of a jam-packed train carriage. Alone in a crowd, tears washed mascara down her cheeks. Few people even noticed. And nobody close-by left their comfort zone to comfort her; perhaps for fear of being misunderstood.听 Frustrated and from a distance, I prayed for her, wondering if she needed company, consolation, or just her own space.

听Singleness in three different forms!听

听As a married man, who鈥檚 been in the same relationship for 40 years, I鈥檓 reminded that 鈥榖eing single鈥� isn鈥檛 a 鈥榦ne size fits all鈥�.听 I guess I need to be more sensitive to those whose life-story is playing out differently from my own.听

听Perhaps the key then is to avoid making presumptions, or what might be unhelpful suggestions. Instead, opening my eyes to see those who want to be noticed; opening my ears to hear, understand, and accept folk for who they are and as they are.

听For being 鈥楽INGLE鈥� or 鈥業N A RELATIONSHIP鈥� are merely titles.听 It鈥檚 the HEART that determines one鈥檚 actual status and also enables me to relate appropriately to others - whether at home, at work, or even on a train!
