Growing up in poverty in Portishead, Yola quickly discovered how tough life could be. She took refuge in her mother鈥檚 record collection and one album Yola clung to was Aretha Franklin鈥檚 Young, Gifted & Black. Despite her mother banning her from making music Yola would sneak out of the house to go to gigs. Moving to London in her early 20's she found herself homeless but Yola鈥檚 confidence to take chances now sees her on the Radio 2 playlist, booked for Glastonbury and opening for The Killers in Cardiff. Yola joins Kate and Jason to play live and tell them how her upbringing has made her aware that life is made rich by the company you keep and the risks you take.

On the 14th June at Windsor Castle, the winners of Radio 2鈥檚 500 Words competition will be announced on the Zoe Ball Breakfast Show. The award winning author Katherine Rundell joins Kate and Jason to explain why adults, even though they are 鈥榦ld and wise鈥�, should be reading children鈥檚 books. The author of five children鈥檚 books, Katherine has won the Costa Children鈥檚 Book Award, Blue Peter Book Award and the Waterstones Children鈥檚 Book Prize. Katherine argues that children鈥檚 books can re-ignite the imagination and their unabashed emotion and playfulness can awaken old hungers and create new perspectives on the world.

Our Charity Champions are the Chick family. Jem, Dave and their children Grace (15), Evan (13) and Irys (11), aim to travel around the entire coast of the UK mainland in a 1968 Morris Minor camper van on a budget of 拢10 a day. The hope the 8 month journey will raise 拢49, 000 for a sailing charity for young people.
