Pause For Thought

From Julia Neuberger Senior Rabbi at the West London Synagogue:
Every night, before he went to sleep, my father would read a passage from the Hebrew Bible 鈥 from a collection of remarkable poems called the Psalms that have wonderful resonance today. A shy man, sometimes lonely and depressed, my father would read: "I am become a stranger to my brothers and alien to my mother's children", from psalm 69, a statement of modern alienation if ever there were one. Or there is the Psalmist鈥檚 cry to God in Psalm 25: 鈥淭urn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted.鈥 Or take Psalm 102: 鈥淚 lie awake; I am like a lonely sparrow on the housetop.鈥 The picture is clear. Alienation was experienced by the Psalmist just as it is by people in this day and age. It may be part of the human condition, particularly that occasional feeling of absolute alone-ness, combined with desperation and depression. Indeed, the Psalmist may have been a depressive. Yet, what we are seeing now is different in both kind and scale. It is about living in total isolation, in a world increasingly busy, rushing, humdrum, and full of people- but not connected to me. Atomistic existence. Increasing rates of depression. Only recently a willingness to talk about these things, hence this week鈥檚 theme of mental health awareness.聽
My synagogue runs a CBT caf茅, in conjunction with two young women who have their own experiences of mental ill-health. Not cognitive behavioural therapy, as you might think, but Cake before Therapy, a chance to sit and talk, eat the most amazing homemade cakes, to recognise the isolation depression and other conditions bring, and gain support from others who are living with similar issues. It鈥檚 been absolutely brilliant, so much so that it鈥檚 being copied by other synagogues and a couple of churches. It names the problem, and says this happens to many of us, if not all of us, at some stage. We need to face it, care for our own mental health, AND support others. The Psalmist described the isolation of depression. Our job, highlighted in this Mental Health Awareness week, is to break through that isolation, and make those who are suffering from depression or any other condition realise they are not alone.
