Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From Paul Oxley, vicar of St Mark鈥檚 in Milton Keynes:聽
My mate Steve recently told me about his new hobby: Bee-Keeping. I listened politely, wondering how often he gets stung and if he had ever tried one of those bee-beard things. But then he caught my attention with news of something horrible which he hoped to avoid. Steve said that sometimes an unexpected cold-snap can be deadly for the hive. The sudden drop in temperature causes the bees to hunker down in small groups for warmth. But if the group鈥檚 too small, or the cold weather lasts too long, the bees don鈥檛 make it. The heart-breaking thing is that they will usually die just centimetres away from food in their hive which would have helped them survive.聽
Beekeepers call this 鈥渋solation starvation鈥 As he said this I was captivated. I think I鈥檓 prone to something similar! To varying degrees, all of us have to struggle for mental wholeness. I鈥檝e never wrestled under the weight of depression or felt the nagging presence of lurking anxiety, but I have, like most of us I guess, been struck by days of doubt, worry or grief and that unnerving sensation that everyone else is doing life better than me. Often, my reaction is to hunker down alone in my mind, drink from the well of self-pity, listen to Alanis Morrisette albums and revel in isolation! One of the claims of Jesus I鈥檝e found helpful is the mysterious presence of God - available to anyone, anytime, anywhere, and is especially designed for those of us who find ourselves in need of peace, comfort or clarity.聽
One of the challenges of Jesus is to build a community defined by love, pre-emptively noticing the needs of our neighbour, so that nobody finds themselves isolated, unseen and misunderstood. And maybe this is the bit I need to hear today. At the moment I鈥檓 not afflicted by anxiety or depression, tomorrow I might be. So maybe my gift to today is to notice someone who is struggling. I can鈥檛 stop the hurt, but I can prevent isolation. Maybe in the future they鈥檒l do the same for me. This is the mark of a society which produces something truly sweet and is the kind of person I鈥檇 like to be.
