Taoiseach Leo Varadkar under fire from IRA victims for agreeing to open this year's West Belfast Festival
Taoiseach Leo Varadkar under fire from IRA victims for agreeing to open this year's West Belfast Festival.
The Taoiseach Leo Varadkar is under fire this morning as he heads north for a series of engagements. Unionists have welcomed his planned visit today to Orange Order headquarters in East Belfast. But it's what he's doing tomorrow in the west of the city that has drawn criticism - Mr Varadkar is due to launch F茅ile an Phobail, the West Belfast Festival. Ulster Unionist MLA Doug Beattie tweeted the Taoiseach last night saying: "Use your influence - promotion of terrorism is wrong." He picked out two events - A Great Escape, where Maze escapers will tell their story - and "from Guerilla War to Government, the Ballymurphy Story Tour'. Stephen spoke to Austin Stack, whose father Brian was an Irish prison officer murdered by the IRA, and the commentator Andree Murphy.
Also on the programme, Sinn Fein have called on the IFA to cancel Northern Ireland's upcoming friendly against Israel. The match is due to take place at Windsor Park in September. The call comes days after Argentina announced they would not be playing Israel in Jerusalem this Saturday. Stephen spoke to Sinn Fein MLA Pat Sheehan and asked why they were calling for the game to be cancelled and got the views of commentators Phil Kelly and Frank Shivers and Alliance Party's Chris Lyttle.
All that and more on the biggest show in the country.
