Charlotte Church: Inside My Brain

Charlotte Church embarks on a journey to explore the cutting edge of mental health research and learn more about the relationship between our mental health and our brains.

Mental health affects one in four of us, but how much do we really know about the relationship between our mental health and our brains? Driven by her passion for science and her personal family battle with depression, Charlotte Church is going on a scientific journey to explore the cutting edge of mental health research and seek out the answers.

How much is mental health down to our DNA or the faulty workings of the brain? How do antidepressants really work? Could what we eat be having an impact on our mental health? And will science discover cures for mental health conditions such as depression? These are just some of the questions that Charlotte explores in this revealing documentary.

It's a topic that is close to Charlotte's heart, as her mother Maria has faced a lifelong battle with depression. Charlotte's journey takes her to the UK's biggest brain bank, where she literally gets to grips with a human brain to delve into how it works. She discovers how natural hallucinogenic drugs are being used to try and find a cure for severe depression.

Charlotte faces up to her own DNA in a test tube as she reveals how science is now looking to genetics to find answers for mental health conditions. She also meets the young female professor who has managed to turn human hair tissue into 'mini brains', grown in the lab, to enable science to work on living human brain tissue and make new discoveries.
