Nerves of Steele
Rugby broadcaster and after-dinner speaker Phil Steele reveals the story of his lifelong struggle with crippling bouts of depression and anxiety.
Rugby broadcaster and after-dinner speaker Phil Steele is renowned for his humour and upbeat demeanour. But his public face has masked a private battle with depression and anxiety since his early 20s. In this documentary Phil tells his story in the hope it will help others who may be struggling with their mental health and remove the stigma of a condition that affects one in four of us.
Alongside crippling bouts of mental illness, Phil has also endured heart-breaking personal tragedy - from the loss of his parents as a young man to the early deaths of his sister and wife.
But his story is ultimately an uplifting one. Despite these devastating setbacks, Phil has managed to live a full and rewarding personal and professional life - from teaching and playing first class rugby to broadcasting and speaking at prestigious venues across the world.
In this programme Phil relives the pivotal moments on his mental health journey and explores why men in particular need to share their struggles with depression and anxiety, and not be afraid to seek help.
