Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

Comedian & writer Paul Kerensa

聽My left side is rubbish. It may be a coincidence, but I鈥檝e got a clicky left knee, my left kidney鈥檚 dodgy, I鈥檝e had 2 corneal transplants (both a la gauche) and my port-side ear gets bunged up. I鈥檓 only 38! On the plus side, my right half鈥檚 golden. My right knee鈥檚 champion, my starboard eye could see for miles, I鈥檓 right-handed and if I had to choose a favourite nostril 鈥 well you get the idea.

聽So last week, hospitalized with a mystery belly pain, it was indeed on my left. Nothing serious, it turned out 鈥 but by the time they solved it, I鈥檇 been kept in several days, and missed seemingly crucial filming work. The self-employed creative curse. We all know, you can鈥檛 miss 鈥楢ction!鈥 on a film set, or curtain up at First Night. Like super-gluing myself to this band, you stick to The Script 鈥 or lose the job.

Job lost, in hospital overnight, I caught Grumpyitis: symptoms of moaning and self-pity鈥 Take one dose of humble pie a day till you improve.

聽My irritation was put in context by the ninety-something in the next bed. I鈥檇 recover soon, lost some work, but he knew he wouldn鈥檛 see Christmas. He鈥檇 made his peace with it, he said, and just wanted to be home, walking his dog, while he could.

聽Next morning, he was discharged. As he left, recalling my financial frustration, he approached me, with a smile, took out his wallet鈥 and counted out some notes. I couldn鈥檛 believe it. He said, 鈥淚鈥檝e learned this about money: You can鈥檛 take it with you.鈥 Then he put the money back, and you know what? He took it with him. His point? Don鈥檛 chase that. He left for home, a wagging tail awaiting him. Chase that instead.

聽鈥淣o one can serve two masters,鈥 said Jesus. 鈥淵ou can鈥檛 serve God and money.鈥 I may be split, into rubbish left and 鈥榓lright鈥 right 鈥 but my attentions divide too. I chase the money, the prize, the glory 鈥 at what cost?

聽St Paul suggested it鈥檚 not 鈥榤oney鈥 that鈥檚 the root of all evil, but 鈥love of money鈥. Instead, we can direct that love, into doing what we love, for those we love, or with those we love.

聽When I鈥檓 pulled in two directions, perhaps I鈥檒l think twice, knowing deep down, that if it鈥檚 not right, perhaps it should be left.
