Pause for Thought
The Reverend Kate Bottley, a Church of England priest in North Nottinghamshire:
Beauty comes in all sizes and bravery knows no age. My friends’ daughter Beau Matilda, was born a year ago, her name actually means Beautiful and Brave and it suited her well. Beau Matilda was born quite a lot too early and for the two short weeks that she blessed us with her presence little Beau made quite a big difference to the world.
This year on the anniversary of her amazing fortnight, her parents, rightly still missing her terribly, decided to turn the injustice of her short life into a celebration of the privilege of being her mum and dad and do something amazing planning gestures of kindness and courage, for every day that Beau Matilda was in the world. Fourteen days of living up to their daughter’s name, every act would be beautiful or brave or both. Her auntie, her cousins and her mum and Dad’s friends joined in too. Their mate Gareth took flowers to the neighbours he’d never got round to meeting, Jody had her hair cut to be made into wigs for children having chemo, and Alison met a snake. And finally on the anniversary of the day they said goodbye to their amazing little girl, Beau Matilda’s Mum and Dad went back to visit the neonatal unit where they’d shared her first and last cuddle, taking treats for the wonderful staff who still feel like family and some hand knitted hats to warm the other babies like Beau.
The Bible says God will turn mourning into dancing and tears of sorrow into tears of joy. It doesn't mean Beau’s mum and dad don't have the right to feel angry or sad, they do and it doesn't mean that Beau’s death was part of some divine plan, I don’t believe it was, but what it does mean is that even in the bleakest and most desperate bits of this messy and difficult life, beauty and light can still be found, like a flower growing through a pavement crack, joy finds a way.
So be courageous and gorgeous, intrepid and inspirational, be brave, be beautiful and be more Beau, inspiring others, facing challenges, celebrating life and searching for the joy. Little Beau Matilda managed to it in her two weeks, most of us have more time than that, imagine just how much more what we might do.
