Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

The Reverend Kate Bottley, a Church of England priest in North Nottinghamshire:

There was much excitement in our house last week, we had a special visitor, well to be precise 7 special visitors. A mother duck and her 6 ducklings decided to take up residence in our garden, I wasn't in when they arrived but a flurry of text messages with photos from my husband made me finish my meeting early and rush home to see them for myself. My kids beat me to it and by the time I walked through the door the duck and ducklings had all been named and discussions were afoot as what to do next. The professionals were contacted and advised that the best thing was to leave well enough alone, and Barbara the duck and her babies were sure to find their own way back to the local canal.

I was dispatched to the shop for a paddling pool and returned with a deluxe version and something that might do for a duck’s dinner. Barbara the Duck kept her brood out of sight while I inflated and filled the pool, quickly blessed the water and retreated. I drew the line at lilos and a diving board. The kids got snacks, turned off their devices for once and settled down to watch out of the kitchen window as Barbara and her babies went for an early evening dip.

Most faiths and traditions place an importance on hospitality and generous welcome. Jesus said ‘Come to me all who are thirsty and I will give you the water of life.’ An invitation to dabble and drink from water better than a paddling pool.  And if I'm supposed to follow where he leads then the challenge is to offer that same welcome to others as he did and to provide where there’s a need, not just giving the minimum but giving the best.  By doing that differences are forgotten and blessing reciprocated, the host and the guest both receiving from the experience.

Barbara and her babies disappeared through the fence 4 days ago.  I’m sure I saw them bobbing about on the pond in the park. We've kept the padding pool and the duck food, you know just in case Barbara the duck decides to bless us with her presence again and allow us the privilege of hosting her in future. It'd be lovely to see her.
