Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Writer and Musician, Jahnavi Harrison.

Yesterday at this time the wonderful Remona spoke movingly that "Our hearts are bound together, and we will carry each other through.

Words don’t come easily at times like this. As I thought of the young people in particular who were caught up in the incident on Monday night, I remembered the day in 2001 when the Twin Towers came down. I was 14 years old, and when I first heard the news at school, I thought people were talking about a toy remote controlled plane crashing into a rooftop somewhere. My mind could barely comprehend the images that awaited me on TV when I got home.

I didn’t know then that my whole adult life would been punctuated by the news of terrorist acts — that the ticker tapes announcing death tolls, and the words of comfort that followed would become somewhat familiar.

What happened on Monday night contained the elements of so many of the other tragic attacks in recent years – yet this one was different, in that it clearly targeted young people, united in celebration of music they love. It was violence of the most senseless and cowardly order.

As my heart feels deeply for the families and friends of those affected by the attack, I also think of young people all over the world, and the fear they might be feeling.

The Hindu scripture, the Bhagavata Purana, offers these ancient words of prayer, spoken by the child saint, Prahlad Maharaj.

ÌýMay the entire universe be blessed with peace and hope. May everyone driven by envy and enmity become pacified and reconciled. May all living beings develop abiding concern for the welfare of others. May our own hearts and minds be filled with purity and serenity. May all these blessings flow naturally, when the hearts and minds of all are joyfully absorbed in love and service for the Lord.

At times like these, children and young people are watching, listening, learning – forming their view of this world. Although it is natural to feel fear, anger and sorrow in these times, I pray that young people everywhere will not lose heart, or hope in the goodness of humanity.

Ìý
