On Memorial Ground

New music by David Lang for the centenary of the Battle of the Somme, to which people have added their own words to express the emotion of remembering.

As the nation prepares for two minutes of silence on Armistice Day, we hear about new music written to mark 100 years since the end of the Battle of the Somme.

'Memorial Ground', composed by David Lang, opens with the words, "Those who have truly given". Silences are interspersed, so that people in groups large and small, in their own places and from their own experiences and memories, can add words expressing their emotional response. These can be new or well-loved poems, fragments of letters, or names remembered on rolls of honour or village memorials.
We tell some of the stories commemorated in individual lyrics added to the piece, and reflect what people feel it's important to remember as they come together through music.
