Mandatory water charges in Ireland
Calum Maclean is in Ireland, where mandatory water charges have caused uproar. Ireland’s water system is in dire need of upgrade, and the charges have been introduced to help pay for the work. Some parts of the country have unsuitable drinking supplies and are on boil water notices. The charges are a legacy of the Troika agreement Ireland signed up to when the banks failed following the financial crisis. Thousands have very visibly protested the charges, and the unpopular policy could yet have political ramifications in Ireland.Â
