To qualify for Job Seekers Allowance, recipients must supply the Job Centre with a weekly "diary", charting everything they did to find a job, and the outcomes. Failure to do so will result in withdrawal of benefits.
The Job Seeker's Diary tells the story of Nicola Reid, a twenty five year old trainee solicitor who cannot find a job following her qualifying year. As a result, she has been forced to go on benefits and seek work. Nicola is a proud and vain woman. She is motivated by status and monetary gain, qualities passed down to her by her dominating father, and as such she treats the process of finding work with great disdain. At first Nicola is highly motivated believing that a job is just around the corner but her optimistic approach soon turns to despair when she realises that the recession has effectively destroyed any hope she might have of finding work. Coupled to this is the breakdown in her relationship with her fianc茅 Mark, a school teacher who cares little for money or what the rest of the world thinks of him. Nicola has taken Mark for granted and often unloads her frustrations on him.
