Martin Handley introduces a concert by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra under Marin Alsop. Shostakovich: Tahiti Trot. Gershwin: Piano Concerto in F. Prokofiev: Symphony No 5.
Martin Handley introduces a concert with Marin Alsop conducting the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in a programme of 20th-century Russian and American music. Two jazz-influenced pieces open the concert: Shostakovich's miniature Tahiti Trot based on the jazz-standard Tea for Two and Gershwin's Piano Concerto.
The performance concludes with Prokofiev's Fifth Symphony, composed towards the end of the Second World War and premiered in January 1945. Known for its combination of razor-sharp wit and flowing melodic lines, it is one of Prokofiev's most popular works.
