Howard Carter And The Curse Of Tutankhamun

Howard Carter And The Curse Of Tutankhamun

The story of Tutankhamun and his fabulous treasure is well known; so, too, is the tale of the supposed curse, said to haunt all those who were at the opening of his tomb.

However, the real story of the man who discovered Tutankhamun and his life-long ambition to find the Boy King is just as fascinating.

Howard Carter was born on 6 May 1873 in Brompton, London, to a fashionable animal painter, Samuel John Carter.

Because of Howard's ill health, he was sent to live in the country with his aunts. Thought to be too delicate to be sent away to private school, he was quietly educated at home.

His lack of official schooling and erratic spelling was to cause him embarrassment in later life, and explains his withdrawn and sometimes difficult personality.

From an early age, Howard showed an aptitude for drawing and he went on to become an archaeological artist.

It was in this capacity that he first visited Cairo. Aged just 17, he accompanied Baron William Amherst on an expedition to Egypt.

From here, his fascination with all things Egyptian was born and archaeology became his passion and eventually his life's work.
