Julia the milkmaidAfter fulfilling a lifelong ambition to drive a combine harvester, 成人快手 Radio York presenter Julia Booth was given another countryside challenge. Farmer Richard Gill invited Julia to milk his cows. Here's what she has to say about the experience. Julia BoothListen to Julia Booth on Saturday and Sunday between 7 and 10am. So one of the things I love about presenting the show in such a rural county is hearing from people as they're on tractors, mucking out horses, feeding the pigs etc. Listeners have started offering me the chance to try agricultural jobs for myself. In August I fulfilled a long-held ambition and drove a Combine Harvester (thanks to Keith Snowball in Brandsby). Richard Gill, who keeps cattle at his farm in Alne near Easingwold heard it and phoned to offer me another farming challenge - to milk his cows. "Don't wear white", he instructed me so I realised this could be a seriously dirty job. I also hadn't quite twigged that before you milk the cows you have to "call them in" from the field.听
Mindful of our colleague Jonathan Cowap, who believes his name may originate from the "calling-in" tradition, Jules and I tried shouting "cow-ap" at the field of bemused creatures. They looked at us as though we were mad, so on Richard's advice we tried a more forceful "gooo-aarn" with accompanying arm movements. Stop kicking me! The cows are amazing, they knew exactly how to line themselves up for the milking parlour. I was rather a slow learner but eventually got the hang of getting the flow going with a spot of hand-milking, then attaching the machine to get down to business. Or, as I shouted in the excitement, "I'm attaching the thingy to the thingy".听 Richard was the perfect gentleman offering us tea around the farmhouse kitchen table, guiding me through the process and kindly inviting me to repeat the process on a winter's morning at 4 am. I think I'll pass, thanks Richard. Julia Boothlast updated: 04/06/2009 at 15:44 SEE ALSOYou are in: North Yorkshire > 成人快手 Radio York > 成人快手 Radio York Features > Julia the milkmaid |
