Steph McGuckin

Steph McGuckin was born in Magherafelt, Co. Derry and has been writing from a young age. She moved to Belfast in 2004 to pursue a degree in English and Film Studies. After graduating, she decided to develop her hobby of writing poetry into a career. Her aim is to become a published author.

There Once Was Hope by Steph McGuckin

There was once a promise of snow,
But the sky said ‘No,
You don’t deserve such a pretty feat;
Be content with sleet.’

There was once a promise of friends
Who said ‘This is the end
You refused to go; you’ve let us down
We no longer want you around.’

There was once a promise of love
But the heart ruled by the head said
‘Leave your soul mate, for love is dead;
Settle for this fleeting fancy instead.’

Life is a pot of empty promises
Not only of things I should have,
But of things I will most certainly lose
By my own hand.Ìý
