Brian Gogarty
Brian Gogarty

Brian is a 'Bardist' from mid-Ulster who is married with three weans. He works as a Banker, a job that is driving him insane. He was brought up in the 'City' but has lived in the countryside since 1984. He was runner-up in the Spring artsextra short story competition with his story Dishpan Hands.

Belfast's Picture Thief by Brian Gogarty

They sat down at the table to listen to some verse,
but as they knocked the wine back things gradually got worse.

At first Jacinta fancied him as she listened to the poems,
and said to her companions 'I like to jump his bones'.

The evening was successful, the wine flowed like a stream,
but she wanted a memento from this dramatic scene.

She saw the painting on the wall, six feet from the floor,
and when no one was looking, she whisked it out the door.

The problem was the red wine - it sorta slowed her down,
so Mark charged out into the street and pulled her to the ground.

She wouldn't give the painting back and held on really tight,
but Mark was more determined - he wouldn't lose this fight.

They wrestled for a long time, neither would give in,
then Jacinta caught him with a right hook to his chin.

Mark held on to the painting tightly with both hands,
Jacinta was quite resolute he wouldn't spoil her plans.

They tussled for the painting - they heard the canvas rip,
Mark gave one last mighty tug and pulled it from her grip.

'You tried to steal my painting - you took it from my shop
and if you had not let it go, I would have called a cop'.

Jacinta lay there shaken - she couldn't even stand,
Mark snapped as she lay on the floor 'And don't come back - you're banned'.

This story really happened, though it beggars all belief,
the time that Mark destroyed the plans of Belfast's Picture Thief.
