Magpied bring 80's dance to Norfolk

Gorleston based band Magpied, are causing quite a stir in the local music scene as they bring their New Order inspired 80's beats to Norfolk.

Magpied, from Gorleston in Norfolk, formed in the Summer of 2007 and have been turning heads ever since.

John Coward, 17, and Iain Bean, 16, joined forces as they both felt the Norfolk music scene was missing something.

"The Norwich scene is wonderful, but lacking guitar based synth music," said John.

Their first major gig at The Norwich Arts Centre took place in September, 2008, after being noticed by gig promoter Charlotte Norman.Ìý

Influences

Charlotte liked the eighties-influenced sound that Magpied produce. The band have chosen not to use vocals, until, as they say on their MySpace page, they find their voice.Ìý

Magpied enjoy experimenting with music

Iain cites New Order as one of his influences, with their unique sound and use of synthesizers and drum machines. John is also a big fan of the band Late of the Pier.

"They're doing something that other bands cannot seem to grasp. Their songs ooze amazing 80's-esque riffs," said John.

The sound

Producing an original sound takes plenty of time and lots of experimentation.

"I do the funky bass and Jonny thinks of a guitar or synth riff. We experiment with drums and finally polish it up with our instruments plugged into the computer," said Iain.Ìý

Over the summer of 2008 the band wrote the track Disco Teepee Tales, which was named after the band spent time in a teepee at the Latitude Festival.Ìý

With a growing fan base in Norfolk and a number of gigs lined up over the next few months, Magpied are hoping to bring a little part of the 1980's back to Norfolk.

"We want to create music that makes people move like tomorrow is 25 years in the past," said John.Ìý
