In pictures: Recovery starts after deadly storm Sandy
Businesses and services on the heavily populated US East Coast have begun reopening following two days of a near-complete shutdown forced by deadly storm Sandy.
Residents in some of the worst affected regions, including Breezy Point in the New York borough of Queens, have begun returning to their homes to inspect the damage.
Putting political rivalry aside, President Barack Obama and the Republican Governor of New Jersey, Chris Christie, took to the skies to view the areas of the state damaged by the storm.
On the ground, people were beginning to come to terms with what they had lost. Here, Gary Silberman surveys his home in the village of Lindenhurst, on the southern shore of Long Island.
The storm has caused massive flooding across much of the Atlantic seaboard. Here, in Long Beach, men dig trenches to feed water pumped from flooded basements.
Despite the disruption, the New York Stock Exchange reopened on Wednesday and flights also resumed to airports serving the Big Apple.
But, with cars damaged and subway stations flooded, journeys across the city were difficult.
Many residents in the vast area affected by Sandy had to wade through flooded streets in order to get to work.
For many New Yorkers it was an unusually long walk to the office.
