  4. Chris Wells quits as Thanet District Council leaderpublished at 12:16 Greenwich Mean Time 19 February 2018

Thanet District Council leader Chris Wells is stepping down.

He had led the authority since UKIP took control in 2015, but had faced calls to quit from his own party following divisions of the future of the former Manston Airfield site.

UKIP was elected on a promise to return it to use as an airfield, but Cllr Wells recently backed a local plan which would see part of it used for housing.

In a statement released this afternoon, he announced he has given formal notice of his resignation, with an extraordinary general meeting of Thanet Council on 1 March to elect a new leader.

    Chris Wells
    Quote Message

It has been a rare privilege to lead this council through some difficult times, facing declining budgets and increasing demand for services. My resignation recognises a simple fact of political life, that an administration needs to win votes to get policy through, and an administration supported by 13 or so of 56 Councillors would be a highly unstable proposition. The uncertainty that would create damages the smooth running of the council, something so many have worked so hard to maintain in challenging times."

Cllr Chris Wells, Leader, Thanet District Council
